Tumescent Liposuction

An introduction to tumescent liposuction: Removes stubborn fat while minimizing risk, downtime

At Exclusive Dermatology, the considerable skill of board-certified dermatologist Dr. Steven Rotter is complemented by the use of advanced technologies and techniques. These qualities support desirable procedure outcomes and the utmost safety and comfort of our patients from West Palm Beach, Florida, and beyond.

Tumescent liposuction

Liposuction remains a popular way to remove stubborn fat. Techniques to suction out fat cells have evolved since the process was pioneered in the 1960s and 1970s. Tumescent lipo involves applying a mix of fluids to both numb and prepare the treatment area.

The fat (“lipo”) at the prepared site is then removed through suction. A special vacuum sucks out the fat through a cannula or small tube. It is sometimes called “local liposuction” because a localized anesthetic is applied for comfort. Unlike traditional or “dry” methods, tumescent liposuction does not require general anesthesia.

This method is also widely accepted due to its:

  • Minimal risk of blood loss during the procedure
  • Decreased risk of complications such as infection after surgery
  • Shorter downtime
  • Less demands on the body during recovery and for healing
  • Appropriate for patients who may have been precluded from earlier-generation surgical methods

Liposuction may be an appropriate way to reduce stubborn fat along the jawline, chin, neck, arms, and other parts of the body. It is not a substitute for healthy diet and exercise. Patients should be at or near their ideal weight and otherwise healthy. Dr. Rotter will go over everything to expect before, during, and after the process, including how to prepare, after-care, and follow-up visits.

During the actual procedure, the infusion of local anesthetic, salt water, and epinephrine is applied. The above benefits flow from this sterile solution; in addition to the sustained anesthetic effect, the salt water and epinephrine help us easily and gently remove excess fat. The fat is also removed through smaller incisions than earlier-generation methods. This feature helps to minimize scarring.

Technology is constantly changing. Exclusive Dermatology is privileged to offer an array of surgical and nonsurgical therapies for the face and body. Call (561) 561 SKIN (7546) to schedule your consultation with Dr. Rotter at our West Palm Beach, FL office.
