Protect your health with our considerable, trusted skin cancer expertise

We are privileged to call our corner of West Palm Beach, Florida “home.” Living in the Sunshine State certainly has its natural advantages, and while sunlight can provide an instant lift to our moods and is the primary source of immune-boosting vitamin D, it is also the main source of harmful ultraviolet radiation. Without adequate protection, UV radiation penetrates and damages the skin. The biggest threat is skin cancer in its many, varied forms.

Dr. Steven Rotter of Exclusive Dermatology is uniquely qualified to resolve skin cancers and related conditions effectively, predictably, and safely. A board-certified dermatologist and board-certified Mohs micrographic surgeon, Dr. Rotter’s extensive focused training and experience allow him to design skin care regimens and proactive interventions that protect the health and beauty of your skin.

Furthermore, sun protection measures should be complemented by regular professional evaluations. While the vast majority of his patients have been referred by other dermatologists,  Dr. Rotter has the expertise and sophisticated diagnostics to accurately detect pre-cancers and cancers at their earliest stages before they have spread to other tissues and parts of the body. During professional skin examinations, Dr. Rotter looks for changes in the size, color, shape, appearance, and behavior (such as bleeding or itching) of moles or spots.

As needed, samples of suspicious tissues are examined further. These biopsies help provide Dr. Rotter with the information he needs to make an accurate diagnosis and guide his “next steps.” Potential interventions are based on the presence, type, and stage or extent of cancers, which are categorized mainly as:

  • Basal Cell Carcinoma – The most common type of skin cancer, BCCs reside in the basal cells found in the outermost layer of the skin. BCCs resemble red or pink patches and shiny bumps. Rarely do BCCs spread to other parts of the body. Since tumors can be disfiguring, smaller or superficial growths may be scraped off, excised, or removed with different techniques. Mohs micrographic surgery is considered the “gold standard” to treat large, recurring, or otherwise complex cancers. As a board-certified Mohs surgeon, Dr. Rotter precisely removes the affected tissue, layer by layer, until no cancer cells are present when viewed under the microscope.
  • Squamous Cell Carcinoma affects the squamous cells of the epidermis. It often appears as sores or scaly red patches that crust over. They can spread to underlying tissues and even distant organs. So, prompt intervention is essential. Mohs boasts the highest cure rate (94% to 99%) for SCCs. Primary and recurrent tumor excision has 92% and 77% cure rates, respectively. Scraping, freezing, and other techniques may be reserved for specific types of SCCs, such as non-invasive, small, or early-stage cancers.
  • Melanoma accounts for just 2% of skin cancer cases but is responsible for the majority of skin cancer-related deaths. The standard approach to treating melanoma is excision. Surgeries have advanced. So, less tissue may be removed without jeopardizing the effectiveness of procedures. Mohs is also becoming a more common alternative to surgical excision for melanomas.

These cancers are highly curable if detected and addressed early and when in the hands of a talented board-certified dermatologist with more than 45,000 surgeries and reconstructions to his credit over a nearly 30-year career. Furthermore, Dr. Rotter’s expertise in reconstruction almost always ensures that, if needed,  you will have same-day reconstruction services immediately following skin cancer surgery.
